The digitalisation expands daily. Also in the optometrist handcraft?

What are the current pain points, unmet needs and goals in that domain?
Through which methods can we detect them? And as a final question: could they be solved through a step towards digitalisation?

Empathy

Process

We interviewed opticians as well as their customers and perfomed one-day-internships (day in a life) to gain deeper insights into this up to this point for us foreign domain.

Top insight

"We don't need further measurement-modules, we need demonstation-modules for our customers." - Fielmann Optician

Synthesis

Process

Through our research we realized the needs and wishes of the employees and customers. To have them all at a glace, we visualized them in an empathy map. Since our focus layed on the local opticians, we also analyzed the advantages/disadvantages of the local stores, the chains and the online shops.

Top insight

1. The professional and local consulting of the customers is the main feature of the local stores.
2. There is an immense selection of different glasses, filters, frames and price categories which is not graspable by the customer. They often do not understand the higher prices and due to that do not use the full potential of this market. As a result, the optician mostly sells cheaper glasses and the customers do not exploit their full vision potential.

Ideation

A design question emerged ...

How might we help the customer to find the perfect glasses and at the same time help the optometrists to prove/demonstrate the quality of their products?

Process

We created our first ideas through the crazy 8 method and discussed our favorite ones with a local optician. Due to his deep background knowledge and our predefined pain points we were able to iterate and deepen our idea.

Top insight

1. It is not possible to simulate all qualities of glasses.
2. Main issue of the customer is to decite for the right category of varifocals.

Decision

Due to our insights developed a demonstration module for varifocals.
Our goal was to develop a product, with which the customers realistically can test their new varifocals in VR and AR. They should be able to interact with their visual range and to adjust it during the test. With this tool the customers will be able to configure the perfect glasses for themselfs. The optometrist will have the master view on an iPad and guids and supports the customer through this whole process.

Problem

The price range for varifocals starts from 200 up to 1400 Euro. Why? How do the opticians prove the quality in regards to this immense price gap?

Currently the opticians demonstrate images to the customers, which visualize how the visual range would be with the specific glasses. The customer unfortunately often can not evaluate the differences and chooses the cheaper model. Due to that the potential of the market often gets not scooped. In the end the customers often perceive their visual range as too limited and understand the advantages of a higher category.

Prototype

First steps

Now our goal was to make our idea visual as fast as possible to test our concept. Before getting technical, we visualised the view through the VR glasses with an simple video and made first wireframes for the iPad master view.

Controls

The customers should have the opportunity to interact with his view to define the for him perfect settings. He should be able to define the intensity, switch the mode and confirm his choice. We tested several options for implementing these features and decided for the most intuitive one. After testing and discussing this base, we started with the technical implementation.

This video demonstrates the szenario which the optometrist and customer experience with our product. Feel free to have a deeper look at the interface to understand the master view of the optometrist better.
